The Sea of Thieves Hungering Deep update introduced one brand new element into the game: the Megalodon shark. But if you instead need anything else on the new content drop for Rare’s pirate game, you’ll want to hit up our Sea of Thieves Hungering Deep guides hub. It’s here that you’ll find all the information you need on how to access new cosmetic items, such as the Speaking Trumpet that Merrick provides you with.
Sea of Thieves Megalodon Guide
Firstly, you’ll have to solve all the riddles that Merrick’s journals present you with, if you want to track down the Megalodon shark. Head over to our full Hungering Deep quest guide if you want to solve every step in the quest line to defeat the beast waiting for you at the end of the Hungering Deep.
Sea of Thieves Megalodon Location
You’ll know you’ve reached the conclusion of the Hungering Deep riddles and quests when Merrick gives you the drums. Now you need to head to square T26 on the Sea of Thieves map, to find the “infernal ridge” that the final entry in Merrick’s journal described.
You’re going to want to bring at least one full crew on a galleon to your fight with the Megalodon. We’d also strongly recommend stocking up on wooden planks and cannonballs prior to heading to square T26, as you don’t want your ship to sink during the raid on the monster.
How to Defeat the Megalodon
Once you and your crew have made it to square T26 on the Sea of Thieves map, you all need to pull out instruments, and start playing the same tune in unison. You’ll need at least one person (maybe two) on the drums at once, and you’ll need to hold the tune for at least fifteen seconds before the Megalodon shows up.
When the battle begins, you’ll need to make sure you’re holding multiple cannonballs and wooden planks at all times throughout the fight. Follow the Megalodon as it circles the ship, and begin firing on it with all the cannons possible once it turns and closes on your ship.
It’s difficult to repel the Megalodon’s attacking run on your ship, and if the monster hits home, you and your crew can be thrown from the ship. We should also note that anyone who comes into contact with the Megalodon while in the water will instantly die, so you basically want to repel the attacks of the huge shark with all the firepower possible.
We’d recommend having one person designated as the repairman for your ship, waiting down below deck in case the Megalodon hits your ship. They’ll want to repair the ship instantly with wooden planks, as it’s going to be an instant game over if your ship sinks during the fight.
Sea of Thieves Megalodon Rewards
The Megalodon represents a monumental challenge for pirates in Sea of Thieves, in much the same way that the Kraken did when the game first launched. Unfortunately the two beasts also have another thing in common: they don't offer any rewards upon being killed.
Instead, the Megalodon will just bob there in the ocean after being killed, just like the Kraken. This is unfortunate, but we'll make sure to update this Sea of Thieves guide on the Megalodon shark if Rare makes any changes to the beast.
As with the Kraken encounter in Sea of Thieves, the Megalodon unfortunately doesn’t reward you or your crew with any items after it’s been defeated. It’ll instead just bob there in the water, waiting for you to move on to your next target or quest in the game.
