Sea of Thieves: How to Get and Use Pets
We show you how you can get pets and mascots of your own.
If you're going to become a pirate hero for the ages in Sea of Thieves, you'll never manage it without some little furry friend to offset your massive hat and gold teeth. We'll take you where where to get and equip pets in Sea of Thieves, as well as what kinds are available.
How to Buy Pets
If you want your own pet, right now there's only one way to do so: buy one using Sea of Thieves' "Ancient Coins" in-game currency. If you have Ancient Coins, you can go to the Pirate Emporium in the main menu before you start a game, and one of the tabs at the top of the screen should say "Pets." Here you can buy whatever ones you want, as well as cosmetic clothing for the ones you have. At time of writing, the standard price for pets in Sea of Thieves is 499 Ancient Coins, as well as 249 Ancient Coins for each cosmetic pack.
How to Get Ancient Coins
There's two ways to get Ancient Coins: either through micropayments in the Pirate Emporium (a single pet will cost around five dollars), or by defeating Ancient Skeletons in the main game. There's no way to make Ancient Skeletons spawn beyond just hoping hard; with a random chance for them to appear on any island or fort, colored blue and gold while carrying a sack around. Once you kill them, you and all your crew will get between 100 and 800 coins automatically.
How to Get Pets for Free
If you want to get a pet for free, currently the only way to do that is to beat the odds and find an ancient skeleton to kill. Even then there's no guarantee it'll drop enough to by yourself a furry friend, but the alternative is paying real money, which you may not be willing to do.
How to Retrieve Pets in Sea of Thieves
Once you buy a pet of your own, you can find it by going to the Pet Chest in your ship, or finding certain shops that have one kept outside. These chests are small and rounded with a red bandana draped over them, several colourful feathers, and a small collar lying against it. Just select the chest and whatever pet you want to take out for a spin, as well as whatever you want it to wear.
What Pets Can You Get?
Currently there's only two kinds of pet available, parrots and monkeys, but with variations and different colors for each. Parrots are split into Macaws, Parakeets and Cockatoos, while Monkeys can be Capuchins, Barbarys and Marmosets. There's no mechanical difference between any of these, it's just about the different looks and some behaviour changes.

What Do Pets Do?
Pets function as more of an in-game toy than anything really useful, something to play with on long voyages and add a bit of color and life to your ship. You can pick them up and interact with them, even give them food, but when put down they tend to move about the ship on their own. When you go onto land, they'll follow you around. Don't worry about them dying or getting lost - the game won't allow them to do either of those, teleporting them around after you.
Can I Put a Parrot or Other Pet On My Shoulder?
No, you can't put a parrot on your shoulder, though it may be added somewhere down the line. Rumor has it that different character builds and costumes make this difficult to program, and while we were unable to source that information, it makes sense considering the vast array of clothes and body types in Sea of Thieves.
