Samurai Shodown reveals first new game in almost ten years

The classic 2D fighter series Samurai Shodown will have a brand-new entry on modern consoles sometime next year.

Samurai Shodown (otherwise known as Samurai Spirits in Japan) was one of the most popular fighting game franchises of the 90s. The series depicted various historical and fictional characters locked in combat to determine the fate of feudal-era Japan. Unlike contemporaries like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, Samurai Shodown largely faded from the gaming scene ... until today.

As reported by Engadget, SNK presented a new trailer at Sony's PlayStation Line-Up tour, leading into the Tokyo Game Show. The new Samurai Shodown entry is developed on the Unreal Engine, and will bring classic characters to modern systems.

Unlike many fighting games, Samurai Shodown stood out with its historical setting and a focus on weapon-based combat. The last title in the series was a 2009 anthology release for the PlayStation 2 and Wii.
