Ryse: Son of Rome - mass combat, dynamic battles

Ryse: Son of Rome is a revenge tale in which the player dons the armor of a legionnaire going to war against those who massacred his family. VG247's Sam Clay was given a first-hand account of the game at E3. Find out more below.

According design director PJ Esteves, Crytek didn't want the third-person action game to another "lone wolf" title like most games in this particular genre.

Instead, players will work alongside other legionaries in large-scale battles; make sure support is provided; battle formations are performed; and pull off various executions which can be unlocked.

When you participate in large-scale battles, the fight will come to you dynamically as you move around the area. It's called "Mass Combat" and it allows you to fight in a big battle and you, as the hero warrior will "always be the one tipping the battle."

"Any time you go into battle you will always be outnumbered, but through your heroics and how well you fight, you will be able to win the main battle," Esteves.

Crytek's main goal with the game is to "zero in on the Roman experience," and while you can button mash ans do "just fine," it won't help you actually master the game.
