Runescape headed to tablets and maybe Smart TVs

Jagex has even bigger plans for its long-running browser-based MMO beyond the upcoming launch of Runescape 3, including branching out to other platforms.

"We’re working really, really hard to do tablets by Q4 this year," CEO Mark Gerhard told IGN, noting that smartphones aren't really appropriate, but that their bigger brothers are.

"Tablet is more akin to your laptop so the game is more naturally transposed to that."

"I think it stretches the imagination of what’s possible on tablet right now," chief marketing officer David Solari added.

"I mean, RuneScape would easily be the most ambitious game ever put on tablet, right? So, that excites us."

Gerhard also said he's "very excited" about Smart TVs.

"I don’t think we’re that far away from being able to do something very interesting there," he said.

Meanwhile, consoles are something of a more distant dream; the company is willing and able, but wants cross-platform play.

"Consoles are easy if you can just get the console manufacturers to play nice with each other and stop fragmenting the community then we could do something there too," the executive comented.

With RuneScape 3, Jagex is dumping Java for HTML 5, which should make it even more portable.
