Rumour - PSP2 "as powerful as the PS3," uses "media format"

MCV's reporting that PSP2 is set to arrive in Q4 this year, and that Sony has been telling licensees the machine's "as powerful as the PlayStation 3".

The Q4 release puts it in line with the release timeline of holiday 2011 that one source told VG247 back in October.

The article says Sony has been claiming the handheld is "is as powerful as the PlayStation 3," which backs up an IGN article from last year.

A release as early as October is also mentioned, with publishers been consulted for titles at launch.

Sony is "specifically requesting richer, more in-depth content to differentiate its device from app-centric Apple and Android devices," according to MCV.

A "media format" will be used with PSP2 to keep retail in the loop, but it will offer downloadable content as well as "smaller games and apps" from PSN.

This is in contrast to what we were told last May when one source told us it would be "amazed" if any kind of physical media was used for PSP2.

PSP2 will be unveiled at a "business overview and strategy meeting" in Tokyo on January 27, we were told yesterday, but more info on it will be announced at GDC in San Francisco in March and at E3 in June in LA, MCV says.

Going by the codename VITA, PSP2 has been in the hands of developers for at least a year. VG247 published the first images of a development kit last November.

Netherrealm Studios and EA have openly said they’ve been working with the machine.
