Rumour: Next iPod to feature 3D display

If Apple is serious about their intention to corner the portable gaming market, the 3DS must be making them nervous - unless whispers out of Japan are true, and the next iPod Touch will also sport a glasses free, stereoscopic 3D display.

A source within the company which supplies Apple's displays told Japanese Apple fan blog Macotakara that the company is ready to manufacture glasses free 3D displays for iPod Touch.

The display is reported to look similar to a touchscreen 3D LCD panel developed by Sharp, which works in both vertical and horizontal positions.

Apple have made several patents related to 3D in the last five years, but is yet to produce any 3D capable devices.

Macotakera has speculated on the current rumours in conjunction with another existing patent for camera-based face recognition and head position tracking, and produced the following mock up of the new iPod Touch's gaming capabilities.
