Rocket League is coming up on two years old, and shows no signs of slowing down. Developer Psyonix continue to nurture the competitive scene while it rolls out hefty updates and keeps the dream alive.

On that note: Rocket League's 2nd Anniversary Update, which releases on July 5, looks to be a good 'un.

First up, there's a new map, free to everyone, called Champions Field. This competitive-themed arena will be available in all competitive and online playlists, as well as for private matches if you want to get some practice in.

Once the update drops, you'll find the new Overdrive Crates dropping after online Rocket League matches. These bundles have a chance to drop two new Battle-Cars, the Animus GP and Centio V17, as well as the usual slew of customisation options. These include wheels, decals, and black market items.

The update will also add 18 new songs including tracks by Monstercat, and a new customisation option for Rocket League: goal explosions. More details on that, as well as the updated engine audio system, soundtrack options, achievements and trophies and more, will be provided closer to release. Check out some screenshots and videos on the Rocket League website, though.

The update will close out Rocket League Competitive Season 4 and kick off Season 5, and that means it will deliver rewards for everyone who managed Bronze rank and up. The rewards this time are trails.

Speaking of competitive Rocket League, Season 5 will shake things up a bit as Psyonix wants to move away from "long, drawn-out" competitive seasons. Stay tuned for more informaiton on that, too.

Rocket League remains one of the most-downloaded games on the PSN long after its PS Plus Instant Collection period; it's just that good. 25 million players can't be wrong.

If you missed the whole thing, it regularly crops up in sales and free weekends, so keep an eye out for a chance to get on board.

Rocket League is available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
