Rocket League is getting rid of loot boxes, but trading will remain

Crates, Rocket League's version of paid loot boxes, are leaving the game later this year.

Rocket League developer Psyonix has announced that it plans to remove Crates from the game entirely at some point later this year.

Crates, randomised boxes of cosmetic items, don't reveal their contents to players before purchase, and can be bought with real money. The developer says Crates will be replaced with a system "that shows the exact items you’re buying in advance."

All items currently being offered for direct purchase, such as DLC cars, esports items, and the Rocket Pass Premium will continue to be available. Though Psyonix didn't offer a target date for when Crates will be removed, it confirmed that they will remain on sale until then.

It sounds like all key details are still in flux, though a number of Psyonix developers have already clarified a few points on Reddit.

For instance, the developer confirmed that crates will remain in player inventories until this rollout takes place. After that, they will be "replaced with a usable alternative." Likewise, keys will remain available until that point, after which their value will be "honoured".

Interestingly, Psyonix developers explained that it's not letting go of the massive economy that sprung up around key trading. The new system, whose form has yet to be confirmed, may find a way for this market to continue without the element of blind boxes.
