Report: Eidos Montreal cancel unannounced game connected with Square Enix Japan

Kotaku is reporting that Eidos Montreal has cancelled a third unannounced project the studio was working on, in addition to Deus Ex and Thief. Kotaku's source claims the cancelled game was in some way connected with the Japanese arm of Square Enix, Eidos' parent company, with another saying that it was a new IP to boot.
What could it have been? Does it have anything to do with Square Enix having discussed the idea of an Eidos developed Final Fantasy the other day? That would contradict the source who claimed it was a new IP. Hopefully more details will emerge over the next few weeks.
