Rein: Apple could have latest Unreal tech on iDevices within years
Epic president Mark Rein has said at its current rate of progression, Apple will have portable devices running the latest and greatest Unreal Engine in a few years.
"If Apple continues on this scale, they’ll have a device that can run this [the Unreal Engine DX11 demo] in a couple of years," Rein told Develop.
The Unreal Engine tech demo was debuted at GDC, and described by Epic as a benchmark for console manufacturers to aim for - unless mobile devices overtake them first.
"The DX11 demo itself, that’s our love letter to hardware manufacturers. We’re able to give people another road map. If companies are building new consoles – and, who knows, I mean Apple just released an iPad that’s nine times the power of its predecessor," he said.
Rein called the iPad 2 "shockingly beautiful" and commented on its reduced size despite additional tech.
"We’re telling [console manufacturers] that this is what we need next-gen consoles to be capable of," he added, "because we can’t build a more powerful PC than the one that’s running the DX11 demo!"
