Red Dead Redemption 2 features over 50 unique weapons and a wide-range of customization options
Red Dead Redemption 2 will feature over 50 unique weapons and a wide-range of customization options.
Rockstar Games releases Red Dead Redemption 2 later this month, and has provided more details on the weapon selection available.
Players will be able to use over 50 weapons in-game, and there will be different ammunition types to improve accuracy, range and damage.
What's interesting, is the more a gun is used, the better it will perform. The caveat is it will also start to degrade over time if not properly taken care of like a real gun. Player will need to keep it oiled and clean.
To combat degradation, holsters can be upgraded and reinforced to protect weapons against the elements. Off-hand holsters are also something to consider for dual-wielding. Weapons will also be stored in the horse's saddle.
Various customization options, such as visual upgrades, will also be made available. These include personal preferences such as new metals, woods, varnishes and engravings.
Metals and engravings are customizable per component. Players can select different colors and engravings for the trigger guard, barrel, frame and more. A variety of inlay metals for the engravings on each part can be selected too, making the weapon look rather swanky.
Other customization options include performance upgrades like new barrels, grips, sights and scopes. These options provide players with the ability make their weapon unique and handle according to playstyle.
If you're looking for range, a sniper rifle is a good choice, but scopes can be fitted to all other types of rifles. This allows players to switch between regular view and scope at any time.
Every weapon’s performance varies in terms of damage, range, fire rate, accuracy and reload speed. Each will come in handy depending upon the situation.
Various ammo options can be purchased or crafted. These include Split Point, High Velocity or Explosive ammo.
Types of weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2 are below.
Red Dead Redemption 2 weapons
- The Double-Action Revolver has a high-fire rate, and works well when shooting on horseback. You know you're going to be chased, or on the chase, so keep one handy.
- If only one hand is free, the Sawed-Off Shotgun will work well in the off-hand, especially at close range.
- There's also the Varmint Rifle which is great for taking out small game. Because the rifle isn't a high caliber weapon, it's less likely to damage the quality of the skin and meat. You really don't want to shoot a rabbit with a double-barrel shotgun after all, unless you're just doing it to be a cruel jackass.
- A Springfield Rifle will be just the thing when faces with only one or two opponents. While it has a slower fire rate, it packs a higher rate of damage.
- Pump-Action Shotguns are not only great fun, but a powerful weapon to use in certain situations. Close combat is one such situation, and then there's nothing better for protection if you're being charged by a mountain lion. Or bear. Dunno which is worse, honestly. Probably a bear. They aren't as fast as a mountain lion, but they are much harder to take down.
- Those looking for a strong, versatile weapon should give the Bolt-Action Rifle a chance. It sports a five-round ammo capacity and works well at long-range combat with multiple targets.
- Players will definitely want to give the Carbine Repeater some love. The in-game version looks similar to the Winchester, a reliable repeating rifle that "won the west," slaughtered billions of buffalo, and drove Sarah Winchester mad. Like the real version, the in-game weapon features a solid firing rate and quick reload speed thanks to the tube-loaded magazine in the weapon’s stock.
- Finally, the Cattleman Revolver is a perfect all-around weapon with decent balance, damage, accuracy, and fire-rate. It's a six-shooter, and will likely be your go-to weapon more often than not.
Rockstar also provided more information on the Dead Eye targeting system in Red Dead Redemption 2.
As with previous entries in the Red Dead franchise, Dead Eye temporarily slows down time during combat. This allows the player to take out enemies with more precision.
The updated Dead Eye system for RDR2 will gradually expand and become more "sophisticated" over the course of the game. This include automatically selecting targets in the crosshairs, to manually placing shots on multiple targets. It will also allow player to shoot at will in slow motion, and pinpoint weak spots.
Basically, it grows with the player and will eventually point out organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. It will, however, drain while in use but can be replenished by consuming tonics and other provisions - even while in battle.
Red Dead Redemption 2 certainly sounds like it will be a great excuse to spend the fall and winter months indoors. And personally, we can't wait to get our hands on it.

It's out on PS4 and Xbox One October 26, and unfortunately, we won't be able to call in sick on that day.
Still no word on a PC version.
