Reader poll: Virtual reality - the next big thing or passing fad?
We need your vote: will virtual reality change the way we play video games or is it another fad in a long line of failed tech?
As the interest in virtual reality continues to grow, we want to hear from you about the importance of the technology to your gaming lives.
What initially began as a tech curiosity from Oculus Rift quickly gained support with celebrated developers, growing past tech demos to much more tangible, traditional games.
Sony has been quick to show interest too, iterating on prototypes and eventually revealing Project Morpheus, a PS4 compatible VR headset that is likely to feature heavily in PlayStation gaming over the next couple of years.
While companies like Samsung have pushed out cute mobile tech, neither of the big two have yet reached commercial release. Is that because the ideas and technology is stalling, or because they're being perfected ahead of a big marketing push?
For and against arguments are strong on either side. Oculus is still here after the initial reveal and has the support of the PC gaming community. But there's a reason the company was sold to Facebook - is that because it's going to drift into commercial entertainment and other fields, and away from video games?
Sony's support for VR is encouraging, and developers are curious about applying the technology to existing franchises. But Sony also pushed for 3DTV and motion control, both of which have become nothing but a footnote in the evolution of video games.
We want your vote: is VR the future of video games, or just another passing tech fad? As well as the poll, please leave your extended thoughts in the comments section below, so we can follow up with a fuller article later this week.
