Rage 2 devs went with 1080p 60fps for PS4 Pro, Xbox One X

Rage 2 developers chose framerate over visuals for the more powerful consoles.

Rage 2 is a shooter heavy on the action. With combat inspired by the Doom reboot, it makes sense for developers id Software, and Avalanche to prioritise framerate, but only on hardware that can handle it.

At a recent preview event, id Software studio director Tim Willits confirmed to Hardcore Gamer that Rage 2 will run at 1080p 60fps on PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X.

"We went for speed over 4K for the enhanced consoles," said Willits.

Many games offer a 1080p option on PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X, with a higher frame-rate target; usually 60fps. It's interesting that Rage 2 doesn't feature a 4K 30fps option for those who prefer higher clarity.

On the base consoles, Willits noted that the game will run at 30fps, which could be a big compromise if the enhanced versions manage to hold their 60fps target. By comparison, and as expected, Rage 2 will have an unlocked framerate on PC.

We recently went hands-on with Rage 2, and though fun, we found it a bit familiar.

Rage 2 is out May 14 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
