R18+ legislation passed in South Australia

South Australia passed new laws allowing for the sale of R18+ classified games in a parliamentary session this week.

Current state attorney general John Rau said the new scheme would " likely to lower the risk of games that contain high levels of violence being available to minors", The Australian reports.

The festival state was considered something of a wild card in state-level acceptance of new federal classification laws thanks to historical associations with a stubborn attorney-general and a strange plan to re-sticker MA15+ games, now shelved.

The ACT and New South Wales have already signed off on local legislation in support of the R18+ classification for video games, which goes into effect in January 2013. The Northern Territory, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia have all tabled legislation.
