PS5 storage upgrade won't be available before the summer - report

PS5 owners will have to wait a little bit longer before they could expand the storage of their new console.

According to a Bloomberg report, Sony's long-awaited answer to PS5's expandable storage problem will arrive sometime this summer.

Unlike Xbox, where Microsoft launched proprietary expandable SSD storage on day one, Sony opted for a more open approach whereby PS5 owners could instead go with an off-the-shelf M.2 NVMe SSD. Every PS5 console has an empty M.2 expansion slot where said drive could sit. The only problem is: Sony has yet to validate any of the models in the market or tell users which to get/would work.

The PS5's ultra-fast internal NVMe SSD notably runs at speeds equal to PCIe gen 4 on PC, but lead system architect Mark Cerny asked PS5 owners ahead of the console's launch last year to hold off on buying one until Sony can validate them.

According to Bloomberg, a firmware update planned for the summer would also ramp up the console's fan speed, presumably to better cool that area. The PS5's internal heatsink does extend to the expansion slot.

Every PS5 console ships with 825GB of internal storage, only 667GB of which can be used to store games, apps, saves, game captures and everything else users download.
