Sony reportedly wanted to raise PS5 game prices even higher than $70
We may have ended up with even higher prices for Sony's next-gen games.
According to a Bloomberg report, a number of publishers have been mulling over the idea of raising the base price of their games for a while.
The launch of the next generation of consoles presented an opportunity to make it official, which is why we're seeing it more and more.
Ahead of the launch of PS5, Sony announced that its next-gen games will be priced $70 as standard, with some exceptions going below that to reflect the amount of content they offer. Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a $50 price tag, but almost everything else is $70, including Demon's Souls, and even third-party titles like Godfall.
Citing anonymous executives, Bloomberg's report says Sony considered going even higher than $70, before settling on the new standard, which may explain why the hike is disproportionate in The UK and Europe.
2K Games was, of course, the first to confirm $70 prices for its next-gen games, though the publisher has since clarified that these decisions are set on a game by game basis. Activision followed suit shortly after with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and many other publishers are closely monitoring these moves to see if it's a risk worth taking.
