PS4 firmware update 5.50 is now live for all

Sony has officially released PS4 firmware update 5.50.

PS4 firmware 5.50, unlike some of the more recent incremental updates, actually brings new features to the console. It went into beta about a month ago, but has now launched for everyone.

PS4 update 5.50 is a 460MB download, which is a bit bigger than usual but nothing too crazy. As previously revealed, firmware 5.50 introduces several new features, the most significant of which is Supersampling Mode.

Supersampling allows 1080p TV owners to benefit from PS4 Pro resolution enhancements in the games that support it. When turned on, it allows the game to run the same way it would on 4K TVs, which brings a sharper image to full-hd TVs.

The other big addition is a redesign of the console's Library tab. It's now split into two sections: 'This PS4', and 'PS Plus'. Games and apps installed on this PS4 go under the first, while only the games you own through Plus go under the second.

The update also allows players to search for games they own but don't have installed, and hide expired betas and demos from the list of Purchased content.

The Quick Menu, which you get by holding the PS button, has been expanded to include shortcuts that let you control the volume of Spotify/media player, lets you access specific friends and more.

The dreaded notification centre has been updated again, and you're now able to delete old notifications in bulk.

Finally, PS4 firmware 5.50 lets players use a custom image as their home wallpapers. You can do this with any image on a USB device.
