The numbers were revealed in the company's latest financial results, which also showed the PSP is just as important to Konami as the Xbox 360 - both formats accounted for 13 per cent of games sales for the nine months ended December 2013.

The company sold 7.1 million video games in total during those nine months, down from 9.5 million for the same period last year.

For the nine months to December 31, 2013, profits for the company were down 42 percent to 5 billion yen ($49 million) with sales down 2.6 percent to 156 billion yen ($1.5 billion).

Specifically, operating profit in the games division was down from 15.5 billion yen ($153 million) to 5.9 billion yen (58.3 million).

The company's biggest release before the close of this financial year is Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, due in March.
