PS3 owners to lead the charge in the growing 3D market
Sony believes that PlayStation 3 owner will play a major role in increasing the uptake of 3D televisions for the home market.
IndustryGamers interviewed Mick Hocking, Vice President Studio Group for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited, in relation to the challenges facing 3D gaming.
Hocking explained that "we’re still in the early adoption phase of 3D home entertainment." Hocking went on to state his belief that the PlayStation 3 will play a major role in increasing 3D uptake.
"Our research shows that 3D gaming is the third most popular PlayStation feature that our consumers are interested in. Additionally, according to a recent Digital Entertainment Group survey, 28% of all 3D set owners polled own a PS3, with 76% of the group having upgraded the equipment to play their favorite games in 3D. It’s clear that gamers are very interested in 3D and I think the more than 50 million PS3 owners will lead the charge in growing this market."
Amidst growing concerns that 3D is a 'technology fad', Hocking believes that the uptake of 3D will increase exponentially.
"According to research firm In-Stat, the 3D TV set market is poised to grow by almost 500% this year worldwide, and households with 3D TV sets will eclipse 300 million globally by 2015."
Hocking believes that the 'critical driver' of 3D will be the availability of high quality 3D gaming.
"A title like Uncharted 3, whose advancements in 3D gameplay has been compared to the ‘Avatar of gaming,’ will go a long way in demonstrating to consumers precisely how 3D is enhancing their gaming experiences."
