The BBC has reported record usage of iPlayer through PlayStation 3 in December, with more than 7 million programmes being requested in the month.

"Requests for programmes via BBC iPlayer on Sony's Playstation 3 reached 7 million, which is an increase of 31 percent month-on-month," said the corporation in an update.

Total requests for the internet TV system stood at 145 million. The PS3 figure was up 40 percent from December 2009.

BBC's iPlayer was first released for PS3 in December 2008, and was further upgraded in late 2009.

Wii owners also have access to iPlayer, but only a small percentage of total usage has been reported since the system went live in April 2008.
