Project Postman revealed as War of the Roses

Back in May, Paradox Interactive said it had a new game in the works with the codename Project Postman - the firm has a tendency to use Kevin Costner films as project names. Today, the it has announced the game as War of the Roses.

According to the press release, the game is in development from Fatshark, and it will "straight up murder you with a battleaxe." Awesome.

The game takes players to the medieval era of 15th century England, where folks will participate in team-based multiplayer melee combat. To win the battle, you must stick your knights right in the thick of battle against enemies with "swords, battleaxes, longbows and other iconic medieval classics."

Playing in a third-person perspective, War of the Roses features both online multiplayer and a single-player campaign complete with a progression system from "filthy peasant to unstoppable armored killing machine", upgrades and unlockable content.

The focus of the core gameplay will be on the multiplayer experience, but the single-player campaign has been designed to prepare and train players for multiplayer, and will give the players direct rewards to use in said multiplayer battles. These battles will support as many players as possible, but Fatshark said since the game is still in development, it can't say just how many players can be on the battlefield at once; however, it said the number will be "a lot".

Storyline: The game takes place, as previously mentioned, during 15th century England where ownership of the throne of England was fought over between two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet - the house of Lancaster (the reds) and the house of York (the whites). Fatshark believes 1455-1485 England is an "extraordinary and underused setting filled with conflict, treachery and bloodshed," and due to the “death of chivalry” at Agincourt in 1415 along with the introduction of gunpowder, the battle scene changed completely and offers something a bit different to the masses.

“This is exactly the kind of game we’ve wanted to do for a long time,” said Martin Wahlund, CEO of Fatshark. “Our team’s very passionate about multiplayer, and we’re using everything we’ve learned from our previous projects to capture the thrill of the pitched medieval battle.

"It’s amazing to hear Fredrik Wester [CEO of Paradox Interactive] call this a ‘dream game’ for them. They’re the perfect partner for us.”

The game is slated for PC in 2012, and you can check out the first screens and trailer for the game below.
