Pokémon GO Uses "Update," Stormy Skies Settle on Final Fantasy XIV, and the Rest of This Week's Headlines

Whew. We had a bit of a subdued week, but that's OK. I'm still kind of sleepy from the E3 gauntlet, and something tells me I'm not the only one.

There's no such thing as an eventless week in the games industry, through. For one thing, Pokémon GO received a huge update, just in time for summer. Raids against huge Pokémon are a thing, and Gyms have been overhauled. I'm especially happy about Gyms being refurbished; it makes the game a lot more fun For a full breakdown of what's new, take a look at our Pokémon GO update guide.

Other news, views, and reviews worth taking note of this week:

  • Final Fantasy XIV's Stormblood expansion went live, but not without some problems. Well, DDOS attacks will do that. Final Fantasy XIV's little brother, Final Fantasy XV, is going through a rogue shooter phase with its upcoming "Episode Prompto" DLC.
  • Capcom's Resident Evil 2 remake is coming soon, though everyone's going to sound a little different than you remember. Gosh, maybe all the voice actors have colds. Or maybe Capcom has an aversion to unions.
  • Bad news: You missed out on some cool game trailers during the E3 hubbub. Good news: Caty gathered them up for you. Take a look!
  • Mike has a preview of Ubisoft's Skull & Bones. Arr, mateys. Arr.
  • There are some weird things going on with Super Mario Odyssey. Like the fact New Donk City is seemingly built with a floating Elder God in mind. Nintendo assures us all is well, and that Mario merely "captures" living, sentient creatures with his hat instead of actually "possessing them.". Possession, capture … all I know is there are a whole bunch of people, creatures, and enemies I want to bend to my will.
  • Hironobu Sakaguchi's studio, Mistwalker, is making new games based in the "Terra World,", which debuted with Terra Battle for mobile. Kat and I talk about Sakaguchi's works on the latest episode of Axe of the Blood God.
  • Also on Axe of the Blood God: Kat talks about her Ever Oasis review. It's an incredibly charming game inspired by Secret of Mana and other classic RPGs.
  • Cave Story is on Nintendo Switch. Is there such a thing as too much Cave Story? No. No. No.
  • Nintendo's Badge Arcade is dead, but its pink bunny mascot will live in our hearts forever (and probably on Rule 34, too. Sigh).
  • Kat dishes up details on NHL 18, including its attempt to embrace simple arcade-style multiplayer.
  • Mike took a look at Beyond Good and Evil 2 last week, and now you can see the same video he saw. To quote Matt: "That sure is a monkey with a jet pack."
  • Oh, and don't forget: the Steam Summer Sale is on. Are you ready for a miracle?

Today's ending theme is the credits roll from Super Mario 64. I feel like in our rush to praise game music composers like Nobuo Uematsu (not that he doesn't deserve it), long-time Mario composer Koji Kondo just kind of exists at the edge of our memories even though he's written themes that are instantaneously recognizable throughout the world.

Mario 64's soundtrack is fantastic on its own, and its jaunty ending theme is one of my all-time favorites. That's high praise for a setlist that existed on cartridge during a time when Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was filling my ears.
