You soon won't be able to buy or rent films and TV shows from PlayStation Store

Anything you have already bought will still be available.

Sony is closing down the film and TV show sections of its PlayStation Store.

The news was revealed via the PlayStation Blog, in which the firm said that people could no longer buy or rent films or television series from the platform as of August 31. At this point, any content that people have already bought will still be available for purchase; folks just won't be able to buy anything else.

"At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change," the head of the company's video business, Vanessa Lee, wrote.

"We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.

"When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices. We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation."

This news comes in the wake of Sony's PS5 launching in November 2020, with the PlayStation Store being given a fresh lick of paint for this new console.
