PlayStation 3 firmware 4.00 due this week
Sony has announced the imminent arrival of the latest major update to the PlayStation 3's firmware, version 4.00.
As detailed on the PS Blog, the new firmware prepares the console for the arrival of the Vita, with which it shares a number of cross-platform features. Users will be able transfer games, music and photos between the devices, back up Vita data, and allow those without WiFi or 3G to grab Vita system updates. The Vita goes on sale in Japan in mid-December.
Otherwise, the major announced change is to the automatic update feature accessible to PS Plus subscribers. Users will now be able to choose which data is included in the nightly sync operation.
Interestingly, the update will also add new settings for filtering friend requests and messages, which may explain rumours of an overhauled PSN.
