PlanetSide 2: World Domination event changes to be announced today after 'Zerg Rush' concerns
PlanetSide 2 developer Sony Online Entertainment has kicked off the MMO's second World Doination pre-season event, but many players haven't been happy with the new rules and changes. In response; SOE has vowed to make changes to the format, changes which should be announced today.
The confirmation came from SOE's Matt Higby, who had this to say on Twitter:
The backlash began after the Word Domination series event began, and problems with the format were promptly discussed on Reddit.
User DeaconOrlov explained his grievance with the event, "I would assume that this event is designed to provide a meta for players to compete over on a large scale and to the extent that SOE is trying to provide that oft requested element of the game I have to say thank you. However there are some pretty ugly problems with this way of doing things."
They added, "It has long been said that numbers win in this game and to a certain extent that is true if you are outnumbered by more than 2:1 odds usually you are going to lose unless you are very clever and your squads are working together well. WDS has made this problem significantly worse by influencing players to simply find the largest most mindless horde of soldiers and punishing smaller more tactically minded groups by nullifying the effect of tactics with overwhelming numbers.
"In this attempt to provide a Meta all that has been accomplished is to promote and foster a mindless zerg mentality that hurts the game overall. Give us the Lattice, give us Battle Islands, give us a meta that supports tactics, planning and strategy not massive zergs."
The Zerg-Rush comparison was used often throughout the Reddit thread, and it seems that the tactic of mindlessly spamming troops to capture bases without any real tactics has turned the more strategically-minded players off.
At the time of writing PlanetSide 2's New Conglomerate faction is winning the war, with the other two teams not far behind.
