Planetside 2 players have made thousands selling custom in-game items
Sony Online Entertainment has released a video of Planetside 2's Senior Art Director, Tramell Isaac, interviewing some of the players who create and sell in-game items, and their results have been pretty impressive.
Player Studio is a program that SOE began offering to Planetside 2 players in July last year, and the response has been very positive. Aspiring creators are able to make 2D decals or 3D equipment for the game, write up a description and narrative justification for it, and then send their creation into the developers. The team chooses the best items to go on sale in the official store, and then shares the revenue from them with the creators.
"Money wasn't my first incentive," said Michael Duong, who just felt it would be cool to have something he made appear in the game. Nevertheless, he's now earned over $7,800 from sales of his creations.
Another user, Austin Lamb, claims his income from selling in-game items sits at a staggering $12,000.
Thanks, Game Informer.
