PES 2021 is a pared back, roster update of last year's game
This year's PES game won't be the fully-fledged sequel fans typically expect.
Konami has announced that it's paring back the offering in this year's Pro Evolution Soccer game, PES 2021, as a result of focusing its efforts on developing a next-gen version of the football series.
PES 2021 will instead take the form of the more streamlined Season Update version, which is essentially a roster update with minor improvements to last year's game, similar to FIFA's Legacy Editions on Switch.
This will be reflected in the game's price, which is $30/£25. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the first PES release, so players who purchase any of PES 2021's Club Editions ($35/£30) from within PES 2020 (and Lite) get a 20% off discount. UEFA Euro 2020 content is included, and will be available at launch.
For next-gen, the series is moving from Konami's propriety Fox Engine and onto Unreal Engine. The next major PES game, scheduled for release in 2021, will be built from the ground up for "more realistic player models and animations, enhanced physics, photo-realistic visuals." Konami is also working on enhancing the game's myClub and Master League modes in the process.
Testing for said title will begin midway through 2021, but the game does not yet have a release date. It is, however, expected at around the same usual time for PES releases.
PES 2021 is out September 15 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
