Penny Arcade Adventures strikes gold on Mac App Store, Hothead makes promises it can't keep

This wouldn't be the first time an emerging digital market's revived interest in a sequel that'd once been six feet under six feet under.

But this also wouldn't be the first time it hasn't.

After Penny Arcade Adventures episodes 1 and 2 placed 21st and 56th respectively on the Mac App Store's charts, developer Hothead games understandably blew its proverbial top.

"We're thrilled that Precipice of Darkness has been doing well on the Mac App Store!" Hothead tweeted.

And then the developer said something it probably shouldn't have.

"For those of you that want PA Episode 3, all you need to do is get 100,000 of your friends to buy 1&2. Seriously. Do that and we'll make it," the developer added in a tweet that's since been pulled. Joystiq, however, handily preserved it in screencap form.

See, turns out that Hothead forget to consult someone who might have had a teensy little stake in the whole thing.

"That's actually not true," Penny Arcade's Mike "Gabriel" Krahulik replied in a tweet. Last March, Krahulik told a disappointed PAX East audience that the series had reached the end of the line.

"That was a very enthusiastic, excited but misplaced tweet regarding Ep. 3. This is probably the result of the entire company being so thrilled on how well received the games have been on the Mac App Store," Hothead's Vince Ceraldi clarified to Joystiq.

For now, he added, there's "no 'number' that is going to trigger any next steps."

Bummer. We so wanted to ride a real, virtual flesh-and-blood dickwolf. Actually, no. Like, the biggest no. This times roughly all the numbers.
