Payday showed you don't need a collapsing building to excite shooter fans, says Golfarb

Payday 2 game director David Goldfarb has stressed that you don't need big flashy set-pieces and explosive tech to give gamers a fun, interesting shooter experience. What on Earth could he be talking about?

Speaking with Pixel Enemy, Goldfarb commented on the success of Overkill's first instalment Payday: The Heist and said that it gave him confidence in the power of great ideas over blockbuster madness.

"I think we were excited that you didn’t have to be a shooter with a collapsing building to excite people," he said. "The world needs things that are different. Payday: the Heist was different and unique. And different in this market of sameness and risk aversion is always a stronger position from a sales and team investment perspective."

He's not wrong that Payday was different. It's currently been keeping VG247's Sam Clay excited, and as you can see in his Payday 2 gameplay video, the sequel continues the unique themes of the original.

Payday 2 is out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 August 13.
