Pando Networks UK ISP study reveals slow real-world speeds and geographic variance

Pando Networks has completed a UK study which has revealed download speeds and completion rates across the country are "far slower than many broadband providers advertise."

According to 400,000 users polled over the 6 months of January through June, the average download speed in the UK currently sits at 481KBps, with Brighton having the fastest average speed with 1,010KBps. Ware followed with 909KBps, and Stevenage at 805KBps. The slowest speeds recorded were Stanford On Avon with 130KBps, Loddington at151KBps) and Swithland the slowest with an average of 69KPbs.

Be Broadband seemed to have the fastest speed with a 594KBps average, followed by Virgin at 552KBps, Sky at 534KBps, Entanet at 465KBps and TalkTalk at 450KBps, respectively.

British Telecom had the slowest speeds with an average of 399KBps reported and only 77 percent of downloads started were completed, compared with be Broadband which was found to have a completion rate of 84 percent.

Of the nation’s capitals, Edinburgh was the fastest with an average of 653KBps, followed by London with a moderate 570KBps. Cardiff had hit at around 533KBps and Belfast hit at 494KBps which was above-the-national-average.

The study also found that institutions hosting their own networks had the fastest speeds, notably universities, where speeds hit around 1000KBps for a normal average.

Like in the US study, Pando found that larger cities have faster broadband speeds than areas out in the rural sectors.
