The creators of Descent are making a new 6-DOF shooter
The original creators of the classic, 6-DOF shooter Descent, have taken to Kickstarter to fund a spiritual successor.
Descent, which practically created the 6-DOF shooter genre back when Doom clones reigned supreme, is coming back in everything but the name. The game's original creators have been working on a spiritual successor and they need funding to finish the project.
It's called Overload, by the newly-created Revival Productions, which is made up of Mike Kulas, Matt Toschlog and other key developers behind Descent and its sequels.
Overload will not be based on sprites or have any retro aesthetics. According to the Kickstarter pitch, it will feature modern graphics and a single-player campaign. "Destroy robots, rescue hostages, blow up the reactor, and escape before the whole thing explodes," the developer said about the essence of Overload.
The game has actually been in development since 2014, and Revival needs funding to finish making it. Most systems, tools, and the core gameplay are already in place. The money will be used for what Revival calls "low-risk development", which boils down to creating levels, balance, and testing.
The game's story is penned by the writer of Freespace 2, and has Luke Schneider (well known in the Descent community) as a lead designer, bolstering the team's pedigree even further.
The campaign is looking to raise $300,000, and has already passed $40,000 from over 800 backers.
