Overarching narrative, multiplayer modes planned for future Minecraft updates

Minecraft's great and all, but sometimes, it seems like it's more tool than game. That, however - like everything else ever constructed in Minecraft - may soon be changing.

Let's just hope there are no accidental apocalypse fires this time.

"Once we get the company up and running, we can hopefully ramp up development speed a bit, and get the multiplayer mode fully functioning," creator Markus "Notch" Persson told Develop.

He mentioned capture the flag as a potential candidate to kick off Minecraft's evolution into multiplayer mainstay, explaining that such modes will be instrumental in holding players' interest for "a long time."

Single-player, meanwhile, is also looking to go from skeletal frame to beefy well-rounded experience, and Notch sees some form of plot as his best bet there.

"For the single player game and co-op game, I plan on adding some kind of overarching narrative to the game to drive the player forward and provide a sense of direction, and add many more new features, like monster towns and alchemy," he explained.

So yeah. Not much of a Minecraft fan? Check back in a few months.
