Outer Worlds is More KOTOR 2 Than Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian Says

A little context.

The Outer Worlds made first contact at this year's The Game Awards to fill a western RPG void the size of West Virginia. But players eagerly anticipating Obsidian's upcoming sci-fi RPG should learn to manage their expectations as to what to expect from Obsidian. That means less Fallout: New Vegas and more Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2.

Speaking with Kotaku, Obsidian communications director Mikey Dowling took the time to clarify that The Outer Worlds is beind developed through Take-Two's Private Division label, a "AA" game label as opposed to Triple-A titles. This means scope of The Outer Worlds is smaller, but more focused. "While we aren't discussing the exact amount of areas, a good bit of context for the approach is to think of what we did in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, with potentially more ground to cover and explore in each area," said Dowling.

Other games that identify as "AA" include Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and The Outer Worlds will take place on two planets that are compartmentalized rather than open worlds. So as long as fans go in knowing the scope of The Outer Worlds, Obsidian's sci-fi RPG still looks like a rollicking adventure.

The Outer Worlds is being developed by the original developers behind Fallout and will not feature things like romances in favor of partners and buddies who will behave according to how the player behaves.
