Oculus Rift dev kits contain free, four-month Unity Pro trial

Oculus has teamed up with Unity to give all developers that buy a dev kit for the anticipated VR headset device a free, four-month Unity Pro license trial.

The bundled Unity Pro trial license gives all developers access to the Unity Asset Store, which is filled with thousands of ready-made resources and is available to all who buy an Oculus Rift dev kit.

In a note sent to VG247 this morning, Unity Technologies founder and CEO David Helgason said of the deal, “Unity provides game developers with amazing tools that bring joy to the process of creating games, while also lowering the financial and time barriers of high-end production.

"The next generation of video games will not only be found on consoles, but also on PCs, mobile devices and in the cloud though none of these platforms offer the ability to step into the experience. That is where the Oculus Rift comes in. We’re partnering with Oculus to give Unity developers the ability to create the most immersive gaming experiences yet."

Wise words indeed, as the indie and mid-tier PC development scene is producing outstanding results. Just look at the Oculus-backed Hawken for one, a game that looks and plays like a full triple-a release.

Developer Adhesive Games is just one of many independent teams making great waves for indies at the moment.

CEO of Unity Brendan Iribe added, “The Unity engine’s innovative design, ease of use, and flexibility have helped game developers of all skill levels develop some of the most unique games on the market. Like Unity, we share the desire to help developers create games unlike any other, and we look forward to seeing our combined technologies transformed into virtual reality."

The Kickstarter-funded Oculus device was recently made compatible with Valve's Team Fortress 2. Check out how it all works here.
