Oculus Rift can do room scale VR, will demo it "at some point"

Oculus Rift is apparently capable of emulating one of the Vive's main selling points.

Room scale VR is the ability for the headset to track your full body in a room-sized area. Headsets like PlayStation VR, the Rift, and the Vive, work well in tracking upper body and head movement by default.

One of the Vive's main advantages, however, is its Lighthouse technology. This tech works in conjunction with the headset - and the two sensors around the room - to capture a bigger scale than competing products, allowing you to walk around a virtual world.

According to Oculus' head of worldwide studios Jason Rubin, the Rift is capable of the same, and the company will even show it off in the future.

"Some people will really want room scale," Rubin said. "It's definitely cool. We have the tech ability to provide room scale. Our tech doesn't preclude that.

"At some point we'll demo that."

Because of the relatively large space you'll need to be able to use this feature, it's not a priority for Oculus. "We don't believe that the consumer has the space in general," added Rubin.

"Has the commercial viable space of the 15-by-15 foot square."

The Rift launches March 28.

Thanks, Polygon.
