Octopath Traveler Capturing - How to Capture a Monster as H’aanit in Octopath Traveler

Here's our complete Octopath Traveler beginner's guide, featuring all the essential tips and tricks you need to know.

H'aanit might just be one of the eight total characters in Octopath Traveler, but she's the only character who can capture and tame animals. In our Octopath Traveler capture guide, we'll be detailing how you can go about capturing animals as easily as possible, as well as the various benefits that this provides you with.

Octopath Traveler Capture Ability

As we mention over in our Octopath Traveler characters guide, there’s simply no wrong choice at the beginning of the game in who you play as. You’ll be uncovering all eight characters as you progress further through the big JRPG, but it is handy to know that the ability to capture and tame new monsters for use in battle is entirely exclusive to H’aanit.

Whenever you’re using H’aanit in battle, you can scroll down to the ‘Beast Lore’ option on the action menu, and then select ‘Capture’, to try and capture one of your foes. Remember that this can only be done on monster opponents, so you can’t exactly go and capture any human enemies you face off against in battle.

Once you’ve selected the option, you’ll be able to choose any one of the enemies you’re currently fighting. You’ll be given a percentage success chance when you’re scrolling from enemy to enemy, and this success chance changes a lot depending on different variables.

For example, you might see that if you try to capture an enemy at the start of a battle, you’ll be given a zero percent chance. However if you manage to break an enemy and stun them, this success percentage will rise up, for example when we stunned a Flatlands Frogger enemy, our success chance jumped up from zero to thirty three percent.

You can further increase this percentage of success if you deal considerable damage to an enemy. If you’re looking to capture a certain enemy, you’ll want to stun them, lay into them with your team, and repeatedly check on the success chance whenever it’s H’aanit’s turn. It is possible to get your success chance up to one hundred percent, but it’s going to take a lot of work from your team.

When you go to capture an enemy, you’ll be able to see what attacks when possess. If you’re successful in capturing the monster, this is the attack that you’ll be able to use through the monster once you’ve tamed it.

We might be all wrapped up with this one Octopath Traveler guide, but there’s plenty more left to cover on the game yet. You can check out either our Octopath Traveler combat guide for tips and tricks, or our Octopath Traveler characters skills guide for how to unlock new abilities.
