What is a Void Egg

The Void Egg is a new item in No Man's Sky which triggers a secret mission. Despite being pricey in terms of Quicksilver, it isn't particularly valuable, so don't go selling it. Here's its official description:

A living curiosity. An Anomalous egg. The shell is tough and leathery, and twitches when touched.A faint tapping can be heard coming from within. From time to time, it appears to sing.

Triggering the Void Egg and the Melody of the Egg Quest

Once the Void Egg is in your inventory, head out into space. The Void Egg is triggered by warping a certain number of times. We had to warp eight times before the thing would start singing, though other players have reported warps of between 3-12 times. This is likely because the conditions for triggering the egg are different for each player, or they are tied to distance warped. Just keep warping to get your first message. Warp into a system, and wait for 30 seconds, if you don't get an incoming transmission, then carry on warping. Here's what the transmission will say:

  • PLEASE LISTEN, TRAVELLER. LOCALIZED CONSCIOUSNESS DETECTED WITHIN STARSHIP COMMUNICATOR.

Once you get this message just open your communicator. You'll be given a brief story intro, and then one of thirteen messages. We'll cover those next.

Here Are the Transmissions You'll Receive

Each time the Void Egg starts singing, you'll be given one of thirteen messages. Twelve of these act as descriptions of a glyph. Note down each one you get, as the number at the start of each message will help you order the Portal Glyphs later. The thirteenth message corresponds to the galaxy you'll need to be in. These messages will be received in a completely random order. If you're set on working the destination out for yourself we recommend screenshotting each one as they arrive.

  • ONE: THE ASCENDING ORB
  • TWO: THE STAR OVER WATER
  • THREE: THE OCEAN KING
  • FOUR: THE OBSCURED COMPANION
  • FIVE: THE STAR OVER WATER
  • SIX: THE REFLECTION
  • SEVEN: THE VESSEL TO BEYOND
  • EIGHT: THE OCEAN KING
  • NINE: THE ANOMALY
  • TEN: THE SPIRAL OF REALITY
  • ELEVEN: THE ASCENDING ORB
  • TWELVE: THE ANCIENT GIANT
  • THE KEY: EUCLID

Void Egg Planet Portal Glyphs

Each of the coded messages above describe a specific glyph. For example, 'the vessel to the beyond' refers to the rocket ship glyph. These point to a twelve-part portal coordinate. Find a coordinate and enter the code, you can find the answer in the image above if you don't fancy doing the near-100 warps required to get the whole sequence.

A clue! | Jake Green/USG

What's On the Void Egg Planet?

Once you step through the portal you'll arrive at a planet called Erpetrith Raya. It is filled with junk placed by other players and you may fall through the earth upon spawning in. Don't panic and just make your way to your ship.

Finding the Melody of the Egg Terminal

Once you enter your ship you'll be greeted by an incoming message. It will give you three clues to follow:

  • -{{FIND US ON THE LONELY ORB OF WATER…
  • -{{FIND US WHERE NORTH REACHES ITS PEAK… }}-
  • -{{FIND US WHERE THE EGGS GROW UNLOVED… }}-

These three clues will point you to the right place. The first reveals that you need to head to the planet in the system that has water. Head to your Discoveries tab to check this. The second clue tells you to head to the planet's north pole. It's the planet you are on, so just fly up to the upper apex of the atmosphere and head in the direction of north using the compass on your HUD. Fly north until it flips around to being south, indicating that you are at the pole. Alternatively, there are a lot of player-made structures at the location so you can head to the base markers. Once there, land your ship. The final clue refers to an abandoned building or base. Use your scanner to locate the abandoned building nearby and head there.

It appears I'm not the first to find this place | Jake Green/USG

Rewards

When you arrive at the abandoned building you'll be greeted by a sea of player-dropped messages, and a terminal that you can interact with. The following message is displayed:

  • You who have found our echo…
  • You are wise, or you are lucky. Perhaps you are one, perhaps you are many.
  • Our echo grows in strength as we ourselves grow.
  • We will be with you soon. We will travel together.
  • We are your friends in the dark. Watch for us in the stars!
Perhaps you are many | Jake Green/USG

Currently, that's all you'll get for tracking down the terminal. It appears to be a hint at a future update. We'll have to wait and see what comes next.

Congratulations | Jake Green/USG

What Does This All Mean?

The message on the terminal is up to interpretation. We think it refers to travel companions of sorts. The location suggests that eggs can be incubated in bases, perhaps allowing players to hatch pets that will accompany them in their travels. It's clear that we haven't seen the full picture here, so we'll make sure we update this page as more info is released.
