Nintendo Wi-Fi DS and Wii support to end in May, 3DS Video to end in May
Nintendo has announced the upcoming termination of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the DS and Wii's online network service suite, meaning many online features will be permanatently disabled.
Online play, matchmaking and leaderboards will be terminated. Service will end on May 20, according to Nintendo of Australia and Nintendo of Japan; it's as yet unclear whether European and North American servers will be closed on the same date.
All products bearing the blue Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mark will be affected; a full list of titles can be viewed here.
Not all online features will be disabled; you'll still be able to use the services listed below:
- Internet Channel
- Nintendo DS Browser
- Nintendo DSi Browser
- Nintendo DSi Shop
- Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play
- Wii Shop Channel
- YouTube
- Hulu (where available)
The 3DS and Wii U, which use the more modern Nintendo Network, will be unaffected.
However, Nintendo Video, the 3DS service, is closing; it will be terminated on March 31 in both Australia and Japan.
Expect news from Europe and North America during business hours.
Thanks, Polygon.
