Nintendo still defiant on bringing its games to smartphones, says analyst

Nintendo has no intentions to release its titles on smartphones, according to an analyst present during the company's recent investors meeting.

The meeting was held following publication of Nintendo's Q2 financial report, in which the company flagged just 300,000 Wii U hardware sales across the globe for the period.

Now, senior research analyst David Gibson has written a report from the meeting, during which Nintendo stated that 3DS market-share had increased in Japan, Europe and the US. The company added that this is in line with the increasing popularity of smartphones. Awareness of the newly-released 2DS console was confirmed as low.

Despite Nintendo's acknowledgment that smartphones are on the up, Gibson reported that the company still has no desire to bring titles into that arena.

The potential for Nintendo franchises on mobile is something I asked Game Freak co-founder and Pokemon X & Y director Junichi Masuda when I spoke with him recently.

He replied, “One of the considerations we have for Pokémon games is that it can be safely and securely played in a fun environment. Are you happy to give the game to your own child or lend it to another child? Personally, I’m a little bit nervous. I find some of the other mobile platforms a little bit frighting – so to speak – in this respect. Who knows what the future will hold, but definitely the best choice for Pokémon is the Nintendo 3DS.”
