Nintendo NX is portable with detachable controllers and uses Nvidia Tegra tech - report
Here's a couple Nintendo NX rumors for you today: one pertains to the chip which will run the console, and the other on how it will function.
Nintendo's next console will not contain an AMD chip like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as previously rumored. Instead, the demo units currently in the hands of developers include Nvidia's Tegra X1 - used in the Shield Android TV console and the Google Pixel C tablet.
While less powerful than PS4 and Xbox One consoles, the lower processor power of Tegra X1, which can run games at 60fps in 4K, is designed to be a mobile GPU and CPU combo and thus more power efficient.
Nintendo has chosen this tech because its NX is a mobile games machine, according to multiple sources speaking with Eurogamer.
Sources speaking with Digital Foundry said NX will plug into a base station similar to a home console, and it features handheld side-mounted controls which are detachable and can be used as "individual pads for two-player gameplay."
"It's a fully integrated mobile games machine you can plug into an HDTV, as opposed to a console with a semi-portable gaming component, bolstered with a unique 'go anywhere' take on local multiplayer," states the Digital Foundry report.
Because the NX is portable with its own display, it will make use of game cartridges similar to Nintendo 3DS but will presumably allow for digital downloads. It is also rumored Nintendo is "recommends" a 32GB cartridge which seems rather small.
When asked for comment on whether the information provided by the sources was legitimate, Nintendo - unsurprisingly - told Eurogamer any official announcements regarding NX would be revealed at a later date.
If you head through the links, you will find more detailed information on specs and additional information passed on by the individual sources to both Eurogamer and Digital Foundry.
Nintendo NX is slated for release in March 2017, and as usual, nothing mentioned above is gospel until the console is officially announced.
