Nintendo's interested in exploring early access on Wii U, 3DS

Nintendo is interested in exploring options for an early access program for each of its systems.

Common on PC and recently launched on Xbox One, early access games are popping up more and more, but Nintendo is wary of customers paying for "something that doesn't become fully-realized."

"We don't have anything to announce, but I can say that we're certainly exploring options and capabilities," Nintendo of America’s Damon Baker told Polygon. "So anything is possible. I guess the important part of it is we're very conscious of it and definitely looking at it."

The biggest hurdle, according to Baker, would be making sure an early access program was a "prime experience" with all the kinks worked out, i.e. server loads; matching customer expectations.

"There could be some benefits there, he added, "but I think it's a very sensitive topic, because you wouldn't ever want to ask for money for something that doesn't become fully-realized."

Baker said the company's Nindies at Home promotion during E3 was similar to early access, as much of the content wouldn't be released until the end of the year.

The program provided users with a limited time demo and take 15% off the full price of the game when it launched on the eShop.
