New Mortal Kombat 11 Update Will Add Krossplay For PS4 and Xbox One [Update]

The Kombat arena seems to be expanding.

Update: WB Games has posted an FAQ about Mortal Kombat 11's "Krossplay," which not only fills us in on the new features but also attributes the proper K.

Krossplay is currently only for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players, and will be an opt-in feature for Online Kasual modes. You can toggle it on via the Online menu in-game.

Once turned on, you can either search for Kasual matches across the two console platforms, or you can join rooms that are marked as Krossplay rooms. Timing on the availability is not specified, but the FAQ recommends you follow the NetherRealm account to keep up to date on when everything's running.

Krossplay is not enabled for Mortal Kombat 11 on PC, Nintendo Switch, or Google Stadia as of yet. The original story follows:

It looks like Kombatants will soon be able to dish out Fatalities across platforms. An update to Mortal Kombat 11 today for PlayStation 4 mentions, among other things, "Add Crossplay," indicating that the brutal brawler will be opening up across platforms.

The 1.13 update, which went live today, addresses bug fixes and other typical patch maintenance. It also says it adds crossplay, though it doesn't specify for which platforms the PlayStation 4 would be able to crossplay with or not. (Also, it isn't called Krossplay, which is a massively missed opportunity.)

This addition was found via fighting game content creator Rooflemonger, and we've verified the update screenshot is accurate. We've reached out to NetherRealm Studios to get confirmation and some clarification on the extent of this update.

Though crossplay wasn't enabled at launch for Mortal Kombat 11, it's something NetherRealm has said it was looking into for the future. Now, it's looking like a reality.

If full crossplay is added, then Mortal Kombat 11 will join the likes of Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Dauntless in having full platform crossplay across various consoles.

It makes sense to do it for Mortal Kombat 11, which has been part of a record year for fighting game sales. Given both its popularity and its prevalence across various platforms, crossplay could do a lot of good for the game, and also help out communities where playerbases are smaller. When buying a fighting game in the past, players have frequently had to inquire about where the competitive community gathered if they wanted to have a decent matchmaking pool. Crossplay, or Krossplay, makes that a whole lot easier.
