'Mythical MMORPGs are boring the Chinese market', says analyst

China has had a long-standing love affair with traditional fantasy MMORPGs, but it seems like that relationship is starting to break down, as droves of gamers flock to action-heavy gaming experiences instead. An analyst at Niko Partners has shed light on the exodus.

Speaking with Gamasutra, Niko Partners analyst Lisa Cosmas Hanson described the market as groing weary of conventional MMORPGs, causing many players to seek out faster online action games like League of Legend instead.

"For several years Niko has cautioned that the repetitive theme of cultural mythical history MMORPGs in China was beginning to bore gamers," Hanson said, "and that new types of games would be necessary to revive waning demand for those games. Now we can see from the data that it is a demand driven market and gamers, particularly those in their teens and twenties, are eager to try newer themes."

Gamasutrea adds that China's online gaming market is fast becoming the predominant sector of the nation's games industry, with online gaming having grown 26% in 2012, as well as the PC market swelling by 37%

The same growth cannot be attributed to China's MMO market, which Gamasutra states, is said to have slowed considerably.

What do you think? Is action the way forward, or is there still a place for the slow, tactical MMORPG approach?
