Iceborne is the equivalent of a "G" expansion.

Monster Hunter World is getting its first major expansion later this year with Iceborne. But besides the new, snow-themed environments, fans should be excited to know that this isn't just some half-step DLC expansion. Capcom has confirmed that the size of its content will rival what was on the original release.
Following the PlayStation State of Play trailer for Iceborne, Capcom confirmed that Iceborne will have at least as much content as when Monster Hunter: World was first released in 2018. That's at least 30-hours of content according to most timed playthroughs, although Monster Hunter games have good replayability value.
In an interview with Monster Hunter World executive director Kaname Fujioka, producer Ryouzou Tsujimoto, and director Daisuke Ichihara for Famitsu, Tsujimoto revealed that Monster Hunter: World Iceborne should be considered the same as "G" versions of previous games, which in Japan were updated versions of previously released Monster Hunter games that added hours of new content, plus a harder "G" rank.
Tsujimoto says that in an effort to standardize the naming for Monster Hunter games across all regions, Capcom opted to call the expansion Iceborne as "G" titles weren't used in North America (instead they were called "Ultimate"). Similarly, there will be a "G" rank difficulty in Iceborne, except it will be called "Master Rank" instead. They should still be like one another, making hunts more difficult but the rewards far greater.
Although a bulk of the content will focus on the new Hoarfrost Reach field introduced in Iceborne, there will be Master Rank quests in pre-existing Monster Hunter: World areas as well.
The new expansion is set in a snowy new region called Hoarfrost Reach, which is still a part of the new world introduced in Monster Hunter: World, but not necessarily connected to the previous area. There will be new monsters who take advantage of the icy biome, as well as new abilities and gear types to help combat the cold and snow.
Players will need to keep warm with hot drinks or resting in hot springs, and the "clutch claw" tool lets players grapple unto monsters quickly without getting bogged down by the snow. There's new gear in Iceborne as well called "layered armor" which goes on top of already-worn armor. That's because Iceborne's directors didn't want players to give up the equipment they already earned.
Monster Hunter: World Iceborne is coming to consoles on September 6, 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One. Iceborne will eventually be coming to PC, but no release date has been given for that version. Check out our Monster Hunter: World Iceborne guide for more coverage.
