Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - understanding weapon augments and custom upgrades
There are plenty of endgame weapon augments and upgrades to be found in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne if you're looking for more of a challenge.
If you've not reached the stage where endgame content is available to you, it's best to look away now as this piece will contain some spoilers.
You were previously able to further augment weapons with things like attack boosts and affinity increases. This system is available in Iceborne but with a bit of a twist.
Each weapon will have a number of augment slots available that you can eventually add to, as well as customisable mods.

Augments in Iceborne require a certain number of slots in order to be equipped. There are also different levels of each type of augment.
You can see how many slots you need for each base augment below:
Augments that require three slots are:
- Attack Increase 1
- Slot Upgrade 1
- Health Regen 1
Augments that require one slot are:
- Defense Increase 1
- Elemental/ Status Effect Up 1
Affinity Increase 1 is the only augment that requires two slots. There are also two other upgrades available - Extra Slots 1 and Custom Upgrades. These upgrades don't require any slots but you will need to source a vast number of endgame materials from the Guiding Lands.
Not every weapon will have the option for custom upgrades. These mod upgrades will allow you to increase elemental and abnormal status effect damage, affinity and attack power to name a few.
These new mods change how the weapon looks, too. You can also stack upgrades, and they'll increase in level and power. You'll need to gather more materials in order to use these upgrades, so check out our guide on how to upgrade your harvest box to collect more items.
You'll see above the weapon preview how many level blocks you can increase a weapon by. Much like the extra slots, you can't just keep upgrading and adding things to your weapon forever.
And last but not least, you can remove any custom upgrades you make and get your items back if you decide you want to change things up a bit. Happy hunting!
