With Monster Hunter finally making its way over to Nintendo Switch, you might be thinking of picking up Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. There are a few words of warning before you do though, as it is important to understand that Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is not a game originally developed for Nintendo Switch, rather, it's a port of a 3DS game. You see Monster Hunter generations was first released on 3DS back in 2016, for American audiences that is. An expanded version, Monster Hunter XX, was then released for 3DS in Japan, though never made its way West. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is a port of this expanded version, given a bit of polish and some extra content. It's very much a portable iteration of the franchise, so you shouldn't go in expecting Monster Hunter World Levels of detail. Still, the combat is deeper, there are more monsters to hunt, and plenty of cool armor to craft.

Starting Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate can be pretty daunting, so we've gathered together a handy list of tips and tricks to help you out. They range from combat pointers to help with some of the game's more convoluted systems, hoping to cover any queries you might have early on. Here are our Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Tips:
- To choose your weapon, head to the item box located in your house and choose "manage equipment".
- Push the left stick gently to sneak, this can be great for getting the drop on a monster, or for collecting resources without being noticed.
- At the starting area of some of the maps, there is an old guy, the Veggie Elder, stood next to the supply box. He'll give you useful resources, just go up and speak to him.
- If you're new to the game, do the tutorial missions. They're a great way to get a feel for each area, and to learn the new Hunter Styles and Arts features.
- Eat Rations to increase your max stamina, generally want to do this before every quest given how plentiful Rations are.
- Make sure you take on the Hunt of the Day, they often offer pretty great rewards and are only available for a day at a time.
- You'll need to head to the Palico ranch to get a Palico, it's to the right of the main hub.
- You can register your build sets at Item Boxes, making it easier to switch between builds for different situations.
- Use paintballs to track monsters across the map.
- If you fill your Item Pouches while out on a quest, simply head over to the delivery box where you first spawned into the area. You'll find a Palico next to a barrel, which you can use to send items back to base.
- If you have an item stolen from you, you can either attack the Melynx that stole it to get it back, or find an area nearby with a Felyne Shrine. Searching this area will bring your items back safe and sound.
- Make sure you pick up the map at the blue item supply box at the start of each quest.
- Items gained from this box are sent back after each quest ends.
How to Change Your Appearance in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
Upon starting Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, you'll be greeted with a character customization menu. If you want to alter your appearance later down the line, you'll need to head to the item box located in your house. Just select "Change Appearance" and you'll be able to change features, clothing and more.
How to Transfer Monster Hunter Generations Save File From 3DS to Nintendo Switch
Given that Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is a port of the 3DS version, you can transfer your save data to Nintendo Switch. All you need to do is follow the steps outlined below:
- Firstly, download the "Transfer" app on your Nintendo 3DS.
- Now, boot up the game on both your 3DS and your Nintendo Switch.
- Select the "link 3DS and Nintendo Switch" option from the Nintendo Switch game menu.
- Now enter the transfer password shown on the 3DS.
- Return to the previous menu on the 3DS version of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, and select 'Save Data Transfer'. You'll now be shown a list of everything you're about to transfer over to the Nintendo Switch, but don't worry if your Hunter Rank is shown lower than it ought to be, as this will reset once you're up and playing on the Switch.
- On the Nintendo Switch, you can now select 'Receive Data Transfer' once the 3DS has finished uploading the data.
