Minecraft servers to link via portals, but "not soon"

Block-building dark horse hit Minecraft will eventually become an interconnected world, allowing connections between different servers. The key word being "eventually".
PC Gamer spotted Minecraft developer Markus "notch" Persson's Twitter update:
Yes, you will eventually be able to link servers with portals. NOT SOON, though.
It may take even longer than expected, with Persson reporting by both Twitter and his blog that minecraft.net is currently suffering denial of service attacks from unknown, malign, presumably Minecraft-hating forces.
