Minecraft hits PS4 in August with save imports and PS3 upgrade offer

Minecraft creator Mojang has provided an update on the sandbox's much-requested PS4 port.

Minecraft will release on PS4 in August, according to a new post by Mojang's Owen Hill on the PlayStation Blog.

Hill confirmed that owners of the PS3 version will be able to import their saves to the PS4 version, even though the PS4 supports worlds 36 times bigger than the older console was capable of supporting.

Additionally, Mojang is offering an upgrade scheme; if you own the digital version of Minecraft PS3, you'll be able to pick up the PS4 version for a small fee rather than the full cover price.

"Our intention is to make this work for the disc version of Minecraft too, but it’s proving a bit trickier to set up. We’ll post more info on this as soon as possible," Hill added.

The PS4 version takes advantage of the DualShock 4's features with optional touchpad menu and crafting navigation, as well as Share button features. It supports up to eight players in multiplayer, including up to four via splitscreen on one PS4 console.

Mojang has also promised trophies and Sony-exclusive DLC.

Hill ended his post with this pretty adorable comment:

"I don’t think anyone at Mojang is entirely sure why Minecraft has been quite so successful over the past few years, but all of us have experienced the fun of playing and witnessed it capture the imagination of spectators and backseat gamers, no matter their age or gender," he said.
