Minecraft: 86,000 square miles of Great Britain recreated in a fortnight

Minecraft's biggest 'real' world so far has been forged by map-making body Ordnance Survey. They've mapped out 86,000 square miles of Great Britain in just a fortnight. See it here.

The BBC reports that this digital rendition of Great Britain was crafted by Ordnance Survey intern Joseph Braybrook, who mapped it all out in collaboration with the company's Innovation Labs team, together with its OpenData tech.

Speaking with the site, Ordnance Survey's Innovation Lab manager Graham Dunlop said, "We think we may have created the largest Minecraft world ever built based on real-world data. The resulting map shows the massive potential not just for using Minecraft for computer technology and geography purposes in schools, but also the huge scope of applications for OS OpenData too."

The world was created with over 22 billion Minecraft blocks, and once players enter it, they will emerge at the Ordnance Survey HQ in Southampton. From there they are free to build on top of the map.

You can download it here at 3.6GB.
